Grant recipient Denis Evseenko, MD, PhD , associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, and stem cell biology and regenerative medicine, is working towards this therapy by using pluripotent stem cells to regenerate cartilage. While scientists have used these cells to create a cartilage-like tissue, they have not been able to generate cells that develop new cartilage. Evseenko proposes a unique approach to storing pluripotent stem cell-derived chondrocytes, which are the cells that can become cartilage, and implanting those chondrocytes into the joint. If successful on a large scale, this therapy would be a cheaper, minimally invasive, off-the-shelf alternative to joint replacement surgery as a treatment for osteoarthritis. “The rapidly growing prevalence and staggering costs of osteoarthritis demand a solution that can benefit both patients and providers,” Evseenko said. “My team is working diligently to provide this solution by expanding on our previous stem cell research, and we are grateful for CIRM’s support of our endeavor.” Osteoarthritis, more commonly known as arthritis, is a chronic disease caused by injury and wear and tear of the joints. interview skills exercisesIt affects 23% of adults nationwide, and costs the U.S. $100 billion annually. Last week, the state announced a new rule that would require fetal remains to be cremated regardless of gestational age and, now, state health officials have released an updated version of a booklet doctors must give to women seeking abortions and its littered with biased and inaccurate information. A 2003 law requires that clinicians give materials to women that describe the characteristics of the unborn child at two-week increments and any health risks associated with the procedure 24 hours before a scheduled abortion. (They have to get a sonogram then, too.) The law says that any materials must be objective and nonjudgmental and be designed to convey only accurate scientific information about the unborn child at the various gestational ages, but using the phrase your baby 79 times in the booklet is neither objective nor accurate. Consider this sentence from the section on development: At 4 weeks gestation, your baby is scientifically referred to as an embryo. learn this here nowThe previous version of the booklet favored the phrase unborn child . In a section about abortion risks, death is listed first. The stats are accurate (about 0.7 deaths for every 100,000 legal abortions) but the booklet misrepresents how the risk of death following an abortion compares to the maternal mortality rate. Of the risk of death following childbirth, it says: very rare 1.7 in-hospital deaths occurring after delivery per 100,000 vaginal deliveries during 2000-2006. a few guidelines on simple solutions of interview skills workshopThe total maternal mortality rate (not just in hospitals) was 15.9 deaths per 100,000 births in 2012. A study in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology that looked at data from 2014 determined the rate was higher, at 23.8 , and Texas was particularly bad at 35.8. It also falsely suggests that having an abortion means you wont have increased protection against breast cancer that comes with pregnancy. Both the American Cancer Society and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists refute that theres a causal relationship between abortion and breast cancer, citing multiple studies. The booklet also says that women who have abortions might become depressed, suicidal, or infertile, without citing any evidence. Tags:

Peptides and proteins delivered orally are challenged by their inherent poor bioavailability and stability in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to less predictive therapeutic effect, said Alan Harris, Senior Vice President, R&D, Ferring Pharmaceuticals. Our collaboration is focused on developing new nanotechnology-based pharmaceutical treatments to solve these challenges and better serve the needs of our patients. Developing new therapeutic entities by improving drug delivery characteristics of existing molecules could help improve quality of life for patients all over the world, said Paulo Nigro, CEO of Ache. By collaborating along the R&D path in this exciting field, we will create a unique scientific environment able to tackle the main challenges in existing formulations and address unmet medical needs. The collaboration will be inaugurated with the first NILE International Nanotechnology Workshop, taking place in Sao Paulo from 1 – 2 December 2016 and featuring Brazilian and international nanotechnology experts from leading academic sites around the world. ENDS About Nanotechnology Nanotechnology is a branch of technology focused on understanding and controlling matter at the very smallest scales. At nanoscale, properties can be very different when compared to those with which we are familiar. Such radical new properties mean that nanotechnology has the potential to revolutionise current drug delivery technologies, and offers many opportunities to create revolutionary new drug delivery systems, formulations for poorly soluble drugs and novel devices. In addition to the potential advantages of enhancing systemic administration, nanoparticulate drug delivery systems can also be used for site-specific delivery, thus alleviating unwanted toxicity due to nonspecific distribution, helping to improve patient compliance and provide favourable clinical outcomes. Nanotechnology platforms will help in the development of advanced drug-delivery systems to decrease the failure rate of new active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), bio-therapeutic agents and vaccines caused by poor absorption, or distribution, significant drug toxicity, and rapid metabolism or excretion. “Our study highlights the importance of maintaining respiratory health long after the menopausal transition.” In ” Menopause is Associated with Accelerated Lung Function Decline ,” European researchers report that both forced vital capacity (FVC), a measure of lung size, and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), a measure of how much air can be forcefully exhaled in one second, declined in women going through the menopausal transition and after menopause beyond what would be expected through normal aging. The authors wrote that the decline in FVC was comparable to smoking 20 cigarettes a day for 10 years, and the decline in FEV1 was comparable to smoking 20 cigarettes a day for 2 years. The more pronounced decline in FVC than FEV1 indicated menopause was more likely to cause restrictive, rather than obstructive, breathing problems. Obstructive breathing problems (including COPD ) make it difficult to exhale air from the lungs while restrictive breathing problems (including sarcoidosis ) make it difficult to fully expand the lungs upon inhaling. “Whether obstructive or restrictive, the decline in lung function may cause an increase in shortness of breath, reduced work capacity and fatigue,” Mr. Triebner said. “Symptoms depend upon how much lung capacity is reduced, and a few women may actually develop respiratory failure as a result of this decline.” In what they believe is the first longitudinal population-based study of lung function and menopause, the researchers analyzed data from 1,438 women enrolled in the European Respiratory Health Survey. Participants in the study ranged in age from 25 to 48 at enrollment, and none was menopausal when the study began. They were followed for 20 years and during that time most went through the menopausal transition or became postmenopausal.
